All about 1st grade...
1st grade is a wonderful year for students. We love teaching this age group because we see such great growth. We teach a variety of classes to make each student independent and successful.
Writing-
Students will learn the beginning stages of writing! As a class we work very hard on capitalizing the beginning letter of every sentence and always ending the sentence with an ending mark. We also take steps to writing full sentences. We start with just coming up with ideas and thoughts-a lot of brain storming. Then we move onto putting sentences together. Before you know it the students are thinking of their own ideas, chunking individual words and creating sentences!
Guided Reading-
We love teaching students how to read. We start with the basics-the alphabet. Once the students know the alphabet they just fly right into reading! We work very hard on sounds and reading skills. Each student is pushed to succeed at their own level. Students work on decoding, adding endings, rhyming, sight words, fluency, comprehension, and so many other reading skills. We use a variety of text to teach each student to read.
Shared Reading-
Shared reading is another opportunity we receive throughout the day to teach the students more reading skills. We read the big books together and talk about rhyming words, reading left to right, poetry, upper- and lower- case letters, and so much more. We alway introduce the book by reading it first and by the end of the week the students are so excited to read the book themselves. The students gain confidence and knowledge as they present the book in front of the rest of the students.
Math-
The math program we teach develops the students using age-appropriate skills that are taught in small groups so each child can grow at their own rate. The students work with manipulatives to learn each lesson. The students love it!
Sounds/Phonics-
Teaching the sounds are fun when each letter of the alphabet comes with an action!
Handwriting-
We use a very detailed way that we created to teach handwriting to our students. Each student will learn posture, correct way to hold the pencil, and the correct formation to write each letter.
Calendar-
During calendar time the students work on familiarizing themselves with dates, months, and days of the week as we use the Mimio to view a calendar. We work a lot with numbers, what today is, yesterday was, and what tomorrow will be.
CREW-
CREW is a fun way for the students to learn about feelings, communication, and other real world situations. It is a time where the students get to enjoy learning about one another.
Social Studies-
We do so many things with Social Studies. The students are so intrigued as they learn about the different states and they become familiar with the ones they have been to. We also learn about transportation, communities, families, and so much more!
Science-
The students LOVE Science! We receive FOSS kits three times throughout the school year! Through these kits the students will learn many things such as balance and motion, pebbles, and plants!
